What goes on in Cape Cod, stays in Cape Cod 🐻
We visited P-Town and were met with a huge surprise...
Have you ever been to Cape Cod?
Teka and I went for the first time last year without planning anything. We literally jumped in the car and set out for Provincetown on Google maps.
We had a final free afternoon in the North East before having to leave the next day, and it was either Cape Cod or checking out more of Boston.
Cape Cod won because it has lots of beaches, and we naively thought we’d make it in time to take a dip in the sea (spoiler alert, we didn’t), and we also wanted to film a YouTube vlog somewhere different.
Pulling up at the car park, we noticed a commotion so wandered in its general direction.
Dozens of people were walking towards the town centre - and they were all dressed up in some of the most elaborate costumes I’ve ever seen.
Walking through the high street, the first person I got close enough to ask questions of was, in a fun coincidence, a man wearing the same kilt I own - the American Dream tartan from USA Kilts.
(As a side note - I shot the above (and below) image on my 35mm film camera, which is something of a new hobby of mine. I have this new instagram page where I’m sharing some of my film shots, if you like that kind of thing.)
In total, I might have seen 30 kilts in total for the rest of the night, which was cool to see.
The man explained that it was the annual ‘Spooky Bear’ Halloween event, and the streets would be in festival mode.
We also spoke for a while about his Scottish ancestry. This is such a cool aspect of traveling around America as a Scot. Whenever anyone finds out where I’m from, there’s always a story and immediate kinship.
He told me about the town’s annual events and how popular they were. I knew Provincetown - known as P-town to locals - has a large lgbtq community, but I didn’t know they have their own Halloween street party, much like Salem does.
It was all pretty epic, friendly natured, colourful and fun.
Teka, who’s a fan of Ru Paul, was delighted to meet one of the show’s stars, Scarlet Envy, who was on the street to promote a show.
Aside from that, we walked the streets, looked at all the amazing costumes, ate a really good pizza, and then drove home before it got too late.
We didn’t have much time to visit P-town this time sadly. I’d like to come back in summer and see some of the beaches.
This marked the end of the North East leg of our current US tour.
Next week, we’ll be heading west!
Seeya then,
Shaun
